From the Director’s Desk

Informal Kindergarten Application Discussion Group

I will be hosting periodic discussion groups for families applying to kindergarten next year.  These discussion groups are informal and provide opportunities to share your experiences

with other MCH families about the kindergarten application process, ask questions and receive valuable feedback.

The first discussion group will be held on

Monday, October 18, 8:30-9:15am in the Bunny Room.

No need to sign-up… just drop in.

Music and Movement with Amanda Hahn

In last week’s Friday Packet, I announced an incredible opportunity - an Orff music experience for MCH students.  Amanda Hahn, a certified Orff teacher and former MCH music teacher, will be conducting the class.  Amanda needs at least 8 children to hold the class.  So far we only have 3 children signed up.  To generate more interest, I have asked Amanda to hold a demonstration class for children and parents.  As soon as Amanda schedules that class I will

let MCH families know.

Attending this class would be an amazing musical experience for you child.  The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.  Don’t miss it!

Returning Students Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences for returning MCH children are scheduled for Monday, October 18 through Monday, November 1. The conference schedule for each classroom is posted on the bulletin board.   Please make a note of you scheduled conference time.

This is a very important point of communication for parents and teachers and not to be missed.  Parent/Teacher conferences are only 20 minutes therefore it is good to be prepared.  Your child’s teacher will prepare comments and questions concerning your child’s development.  Try to come to the conference with your own short list of questions.  Preparing ahead of time will help you use your time more effectively.

Teachers do not hand out written reports at these conferences.  Teachers do prepare talking points for their own personal reference.  It is good to come prepared to take your own notes.  Teachers like the idea that these conferences are a relaxed dialogue between parents and teachers.

If needed, your child is welcome to stay in the Bunny Room for the duration of your conference.

Double Parking

We have received several complaints from neighbors about MCH parents double parking and blocking crosswalks and driveways on Lake Street as well as Arguello.  This is very troublesome for us.  Not only is this practice dangerous for the children, but it is illegal and puts the school at risk for losing its license to operate if the city receives too many complaints.

Please do not double or illegally park your car anywhere near the school even for a few minutes.  There is plenty of parking in the neighborhood!  Please find a legal space to park your car and walk to school!!!

News from the Auction Team

Thank you to all of you who attended our first auction meeting last week.  The meeting was very productive.

We have already received some very generous donations.  A week in a fabulous Maui Vacation Home, 2 night stay at the Saintsbury Winery with a VIP tour, Cases of wine, to name a few. REMEMBER, for those who turn in donations by December 31st, 2010, you will have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing to win a FREE night stay at the Palace Hotel!

We, of course, are anticipating another successful and enjoyable evening BUT we need your help!  Each Family is expected to:

1.)  Participate in the Auction either by submitting a donation or obtaining one from a business or service provider for a minimum $100.

2.)  Purchase 2 tickets for the Auction

3.)  Volunteering!  The sign up sheet is available on the bulletin board at school.

If you have not already done so, please mark your calendar for March 11th, 2011 at the Palace Hotel.

Marin Preparatory School:  I had an opportunity to tour school on Thursday with other preschool directors. This is a new school (2nd year) in the Castro area. Here are some of my impressions:

·        Facility – clean, bright, spacious with art, music and science rooms, great outdoor space – lots of light

·        Program: Spanish Infusion, project based, hands on

·        Curriculum and Scope and Sequence:  Still being formulated but on the right track

·        Teachers:  Young, energetic, passionate and creative

·        Classroom Size:  Small now with 6-7 children and two teachers but expected to grow to 18-20 per class.  Total school enrollment this year – 28 students - growing

·        Worth looking at but a new school with no track record.
